The members of Civil Society in Mombasa on Monday held a peaceful demonstration calling on the directors of the Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) to be disbanded over corruption allegations.
Led by the program director of Genesis for Human Rights Commission (GHRC) Caleb Ngwena the members demanded that the directors be disbanded for gross mismanagement and corruption.
The society accused the directors of mismanagement and misappropriation of KMA resources.
During the peaceful demonstration outside KMA offices, members of the public joined in the protest.
Mr Ngwena who said that there is corruption at KMA claimed that the directors have been irregularly and illegally awarding multi million shillings tenders.
He also accused the directors of misappropriation of funds by purchasing rescue boats at inflated prices, saying they were not made with the required specifications and could neither be used for rescue nor research purposes.
He said the Sh800 million tender for the construction of KMA headquarters at Mbaraki which had been cancelled three times due to protest from bidders as a result of technical flaws was awarded to a certain company.
“The tender that had been cancelled was awarded to a certain company under unclear circumstances," said Mr Ngwena.
The program director further claimed that KMA board violated a court order which stopped them from recruiting anyone.
“The board since January has advertised close to 70 senior management jobs, some of which have been cancelled through court orders,” he added.
Mr Ngwena asked the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to determine the extent of corruption in KMA adding that action should be taken against those found to have misused resources.
