A month historic ruling by the Supreme Court of Kenya, Chief Justice David Maraga made his first trip outside the country to attend Magistrates and Judges Conference in Dar es Salaam.
Maraga, 66, presided over the bench that became the first to nullify victory of a sitting president in Africa and the fourth in the world.
Although he has come under severe criticism from President Uhuru Kenyatta, a defiant Maraga, recently urged politicians to respect the rule of law or abolish the judiciary as a whole.
And at Tanzania, Maraga was given heroic reception when he arrived at the event according to local newspaper, The Citizen.
“Chief Justice Ibrahim Juma introduced Kenya’s Chief Justice David Maraga amid applaud from all participants,” wrote the paper.
“His introduction was greeted by thunderous cheers from participants even though he declined to give journalists an interview.”
Back in Kenya, Maraga is facing a dilemma after the latest decision by Jubilee allied MPs to initiate constitutional review that could downsize Supreme Court’s power.
In their majority ruling, four judges ordered fresh presidential election on grounds that IEBC failed to adhere to the constitution and the rule of law when conducting August 8th elections.
