The outgoing CJ has served the country for five years.

He has also been the president of the Supreme Court.

His term was to expire in June 2017 but he decided to step down earlier than that.

Mutunga has been celebrated for overseeing a number of reforms within the Judiciary since his appointment in 2011.

Mutunga announced that he would be leaving early in order to avert a constitutional crisis next year and to ensure a smooth process in choosing his successor.

He is scheduled to celebrate his birthday before leaving office since he was born on June 16.

One of the things he will be remembered for is the launch of the Judiciary Transformation Framework.

Prior to his appointment as the CJ, Mutunga was the Resident Representative of the FORD Foundation Eastern Africa Regional Office in Nairobi.

He retires at the age of 69.
