Chief Justice Willy Mutunga will on Monday launch a Judiciary Disability Mainstreaming Policy and flag off the first disability-compliant bus in the public sector in Kenya.
The bus has been purchased for the Judiciary Training Institute (JTI) by the World Bank-funded Judiciary Performance Improvement Project (JPIP).
The policy which has been adopted by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), will play a major role in mainstreaming disability within Judiciary.
The bus, fitted with a ramp and adequate wheel chair space, will enhance mobility of staff.
The launch will be at the Supreme Court building starting 2 pm.
The publication provides guidelines regarding the position of the institution with regard to non-discriminatory practices, effective participation, equity and respect to people with disability.
This is in line with the Constitution of Kenya 2010, which mandates every institution to mainstream disability in all aspects and ensure that 5 per cent of recruited personnel are people with disability.
Currently, the Judiciary has 53 staff living with disabilities, 41 of whom are physically challenged, 10 are visually challenged and two with hearing impairment.
