Speaking on Friday during the commencement of an exercise of cleaning the inlets of Lake Nakuru, among them River Njoro to avert solid waste from getting way into the Lake, Nakuru county Director of Environment Kiogora Muriithi said the county has invested a lot and that those ignorant of the law will have to face severe punishment.

“As a government, we are saying those who are ignorant of the law on solid waste management, it is high time they confirm or they face the ruthless hand of the law,” he said.

The cleanup exercise is being done by Nakuru County Environment department, officers from the Kenya Army, Kenya Redcross, staff from the Judiciary and other environmental organizations.

Kiogora said the move is aimed at ensuring Lake Nakuru regains its status.

While noting that it is a responsibility of all citizens to ensure a clean environment, he called on residents to make it a lifestyle of ensuring that the environment is taken good care for the better of the future generation.

“We cannot boast of increased flamingos as we used to have before and the county has invested a lot but what we need now is a change of attitude in terms of solid waste disposal,” said Kiogora.

He said his department will continue to create awareness on solid waste management as well as ensure enforcement of the law.

The cleanup exercise is taking place on five points within Lake Nakuru National park which include Njoro 1 & 2, the stormwater area inlet into the Lake, Maji machafu 1 & 2.
