The Kenyan clergymen have stated their confidence in the current IEBC commissioners under the headship of Issak Hassan.
‘'We have heard from the country's electoral commissioners themselves and we would like to acknowledge the good work they are doing. We are confident they shall deliver free and fair elections owing to their commendable level of preparedness,'’ said Canon Karanja, the NCCK secretary general.
Issuing a press release just after their Wednesday meeting with the commissioners, the churchmen under their blanket body National Council of Churches (NCCK) clearly restated their stand against the weekly protests led by the opposition. They said Monday protests was a show of a heightened polarisation in the country, and that such demonstration only help in increasing tension across the ethnic divide.
On their part, the IEBC through their chair, Hassan said they are ready to hold dialogue with the opposition to resolve the current standoff but firmly mentioned that resignation is never one of their options.
The high ranking church leaders present during the Wednesday meeting included Bishop Korir of Eldoret Diocese, Joseph Obanyi of Kakamega parish among others.
