Religious Leaders have stepped up measures to reconcile and unite members of warring factions of the Luo Council of Elders.
Led by Chairman of Nyanza Council of Churches Bishop Washington Ogonyo Ngede of the Power of Jesus around the World Church, the church leaders say they will stop at nothing until the elders are united.
“We have embarked on a week-long prayer and fasting mission to seek divine power as we move to reconcile the elders whose roles are key in uniting the Luo community,” said Archbishop Ngede as quoted by Standard.
“The wrangles are not good since members of the Luo community rely on the council of elders for wisdom. We are not happy with some of the elders and we want to pray for them to rise above the division and work as a team for the common good of the Luo community,” added the Archbishop.
The Luo council of Elders is divided into two factions, one led by Opiyo Otondi and the other by Nyandiko Ongadi, with both men claiming to be legitimate chair of the council.
The Church leaders' intervention comes after attempts by ODM party leader Raila Odinga to unite the leaders bore no fruit.
In a meeting recently, Odinga reportedly urged the faction led by Nyandiko Ongadi to support Opiyo Otondi.
