The East Africa Sufi Council has appealed to Kenyans to maintain peace ahead of Thursday’s repeat presidential poll.
Council Chairman Sheikh Abdulkadir Al-Ahdal said Kenyans should not allow the highly charged political environment to lead them to chaos.Sheikh Al-Ahdal asked youth to desist from acts of lawlessness and demonstrate a sense of oneness as the country prepares for tomorrow’s 26 repeat poll.“Kenya has been an oasis of peace and we hope the pending poll can be held safely and peacefully,” said Al-Ahdal.He appealed to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to conduct a free, fair, peaceful and credible fresh presidential poll.Al-Ahdal also urged the different communities in the country to be committed to peace and pray against any unforeseen eventualities.The Muslim cleric said elections need not be a ‘matter of life and death’, adding that they should not bring about undue tension and fear in the country.Sheikh Al-Ahdal who addressed the press in Mombasa on Wednesday called on the leading political figures to embrace the spirit of national unity in diversity and move the country forward.The religious leader said many people are gripped by fear due to heightened political tension in the country and urged the political protagonists to tone down on their rhetoric that has the potential of inciting violence.
