Muslim clerics at the Coast have accused Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (Supkem) secretary general Adan Wachu of hatching a plot to disrupt the council's national elections.
This comes after Wachu condemned his deputy Sheikh Hassan ole Naado for speaking on behalf of the council.
Addressing journalists, Supkem Coast regional coordinator Sheikh Muhdhar Khitammy and other officials said Naado has the mandate to speak on behalf of Supkem since he is council's national deputy secretary.
The clerics accused Wachu of attempting to confuse members of the council as the national elections draw closer.
Naado is considered Wachu’s greatest threat as he seeks to retain his position.
Khitammy affirmed that the council will not allow any individual to derail the elections.
“The national office has overstayed in office. We have not conducted the Supkem national election since 2009. We shall not allow any person to derail our programme this year,” said Khitammy, as quoted by The Star.
Khitammy further claimed that Wachu is attempting to frustrate officials to ensure the elections are not held as planned.
“Why is Wachu now coming up with petty issues to just try and discredit other officials? Naado is his deputy and is allowed by the constitution to speak on behalf of Supkem. We are sensing that Wachu is trying to frustrate other officials so that elections are called off,” said Khitammy,
His sentiments were backed by Mombasa region secretary Sheikh Khalfan Ali who said that Wachu is hatching a plot to push the elections to December, in a bid to clinch to power.
