Opposition’s protests against the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) will hurt the nation, religious leaders from Malindi have said.
The clerics have urged National Super Alliance (NASA) leader, Raila Odinga to embrace dialogue ahead of the repeat presidential polls. The leaders said the nullification of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election by the Supreme Court has raised political temperatures in the country, adding that demonstrations will worsen the situation.Led by Bishop Thomas Kakala of Jesus Cares Centre, the group, which comprised of more than 50 clerics called upon Raila to look for alternative ways to push for his demands other than protests. They spoke on Thursday at the Malindi Deputy County Commissioner’s office after attending a security meeting. They further asked both Jubilee and NASA leaders to avoid chest thumping before the election date."The political drunkenness should not be entertained. Politicians should respect the constitution and the institutions in government. Let them embrace proper dialogue,” said Bishop Kakala, as quoted by The Star."Threats, mass action and chest thumping will not solve our problems,” he added.Opposition leaders have been pushing for the resignation of Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) CEO Ezra Chiloba and other members of the commission whom they have accused of bungling the August 8 election.
