Erratic weather patterns caused by climate change have been linked to drying up of natural water sources in Kisii County.
This is forcing women to walk for long distances in search of water for domestic use.
Kisii County Director of Environment Samson Bokea says the county, like other parts of the country, was experiencing major effects of climate change contributing to drying up of natural water sources in the region.
Speaking to this writer in Kisii town, Bokea disclosed that drying up of natural water sources has repercussions like diarrhoea-related diseases like cholera currently being reported in the neighbouring counties of Migori and Homa Bay.
"What is clear is that drastic weather patterns witnessed in the country pose a serious threat to human health as exotic infections emerge," stated Bokea.
The environmental expert admits that climate change will weigh down on the country's struggling economy since past diseases are re-emerging while others are spreading to areas where the pathogens causing them could not thrive previously.
Bokea challenges climate change experts and policy makers to swiftly put in place mitigation and adaptation strategies to save the country from adverse effects of climate change.
