The Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) has urged the state to close schools a week earlier as a way to curb the increasing fire incidents that have now rendered schools ungovernable.
According to the union's Secretary General Wilson Sossion, the students are tired and burning schools is a way they have devised to relieve stress.
"These children must be given a break if we are to save schools. There is a lot of tension and it is wrong to continue keeping them in schools longer," Sossion said as quoted by Standard.
Sossion further warned the government that should schools fail to be closed by August 5, he will instruct his members to shut them.
"Let schools close by August 5 to allow children three weeks to calm down and relieve stress. When they come back,we shall have a peaceful third term," Sossion added.
On his part however, Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i says that the argument that school term dates be altered is 'escapist' and that it can do little to curb the current problem.
