The closure of Nakumatt supermarket in Kisumu town, will affect the economy of the County, Kisumu Deputy Governor Dr Mathews Owili has said.

Owili said the closure will lead to massive job losses, besides residents having to do with the lack of the retailers’ services in the lakeside town.

“The closure will definitely affect the economy of Kisumu in many ways, key among them being loss of jobs and suppliers in this region who were doing business with the retailer lacking a direct market for their commodities,” he said.

“But generally, we have to look at it as not being a regional problem because Nakumatt has been closing shop in various parts of the country,” he added, Thursday.

Early this week, Nakumatt Holdings closed the Nakumatt Kisumu Town branch, famously known as Nakumatt Nyanza due financial challenges.

The branch operated on a 24 hour basis. The closure now leaves Nakumatt Mega City, situated in Kachok along the busy Kisumu – Nairobi highway.
