Nakumatt FC's Secretary General Albert Wesonga has refuted claims that the club is up for sale despite them facing huge financial problems. However, the club which has not yet secured a new Sponsor with the Kenya Premier league 2018 season just 2 weeks away, it may reconsider the move to put it up for grabs.Mr Wesonga attributes Nakumatt FC woes to the embattled retail chain - Nakumatt that has since been handed a new lifeline after the appointment of Peter Kahi as an administrator.“Those who are saying the team is on sale are not factual. Nakumatt is not on sale but we may consider the idea if we get a serious buyer. Our main sponsor Nakumatt Holdings lowered her business hence making it very difficult for them to handle our payments," Mr Wesonga refuted.“Currently we are in talks with different sponsors who are willing to chip in and rescue our team financially. We are also in talks with people who have shown interest in buying the team to see whether they will hit the target,” Wesonga added. The Secretary-General says that the club has already dispatched 15 players whose contract ran out and they could not afford to renew their contracts.“Our 15 players have left the team after their contracts ran out. As management, we had no option but to let them go because we could not afford their upkeep," he said. However, he said that Nakumatt Supermarket hasn't completely withdrawn their entire sponsorship. The retail chain only reduced the sponsorship by a certain percentage and what the get could not sustain the entire previous budget.Nakumatt FC finished 15th in the 2017 season with 39 points and will face an uphill task if they fail to secure a sponsor soon.
