Business owners in the Coast region have condemned the Kenya Power Company following power outage that hit the area over the weekend.
Mr Rashid Ibrahim, a barber, said his business which depends on electricity was highly affected by the blackout that began on Friday night.
Mr Ibrahim said most of his loyal customers were forced to go to other barbers who have generators.
“Most of my clients come during the weekend since that is when they are free. I have not done anything since my line of work depends on electricity,” he added.
Mr Bakari Ali, a welder, said he was supposed to transport windows and doors to a construction site in Kisauni after completing the work on Saturday, but due to the power outage, he had to disappoint his client.
“My clients are disappointed since the blackout has also affected them. I was supposed to complete most of the work during the weekend,” said Mr Ali.
Most of the shops within the city centre were also closed after the owners run out of diesel to run their generators.
“Most of us who were relying on fuel generators were forced to close our businesses since the generators require a lot of diesel,” said Ms Salma Yusuf, a businesswoman.
Several areas including Mombasa, Malindi, Lamu and Kwale Counties were affected following a technical hitch at Kiambere power station.
Kenya power in a statement said the technical hitch affected a high voltage transmission line linking Nairobi and the Coastal region.
“Our engineers are on site working to repair the fault in order to restore supply,” read part of the statement.
