This comes after 18 youth were arrested in Mombasa following a crackdown on criminal gangs that have been terrorising residents in Kisauni.

Speaking to journalists in Kilifi, the Them Mushrooms band leader said it was unfortunate that some Coastal county governments have not been supporting artists despite the region being endowed with talented youth.

“When you visit trading centres you will find youth idling. This makes them vulnerable to radical groups like al-Shabaab and Mombasa Republican Council (MRC),” said Katana.

Katana said county governments can create job opportunities for youth by nurturing their talents through mentorship and specialised training.

“If we can build talent centres and train our youth, then we will have generated several job opportunities. They youth will use their artistic skills to get income instead of being used by extremists or drug barons,” said Katana.

He added, “Athletic youth in Rift valley are earning millions from their talents. Musicians in America are also paid more than the president. Why can’t we borrow a leaf from these areas?” asked Katana.

He further added that parents should not only focus on academic success but also nurture their children’s talents.

“Not every child has the ability to perform well in class. This does not mean they cannot make something out of themselves. I therefore urge parents to nurture their kid’s talents from a tender age so that they can eventually turn their talents into careers,” said Katana.

He however urged youth to take their education seriously adding that their success in life depends on it.

“Youth should take education seriously as it will give them a strong foundation in whatever venture they choose to take later on in life. You can be talented yes but how will you be able to sell your talent if you cannot communicate well?” he asked.
