Counties at the Coast have been urged to train their farmers on modern and efficient farming methods.
Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture Livestock and Fisheries Mr Willy Bett said that county governments should have greater involvement in the agricultural sector to increase crop production in the counties.
Speaking when he toured various exhibitions at this year’s Mombasa Agricultural Show in Mkomani area, Mr Bett said that most crops did very well at the Coast.
He said that farmers in the Coast region need to be taught modern and better methods of farming in a bid to enhance productivity.
The CS said county governments should adopt the new methods exhibited during shows and devise ways of transferring the technology and innovations to farmers.
Mr Bett said the government was moving from subsistence agriculture to commercial agriculture, in what is technically known as agribusiness.
“County governments should transfer what they learn from exhibitions to farmers in order to boost their skills in productivity,” said the CS.
Mr Bett also noted that sea weed farming was an area the government was targeting to exploit in order to diversify agriculture activities at the coast.
“The government is linking farmers to providers of high yielding coconut seeds and is also in the process of reviving the cashew nut factory,” he added.
