Gema and Kamba communities in the Coast region have signed a binding agreement to support each other in different elective positions during the next general election.
According to the agreement, the two communities are expected to support their own candidates for various seats.
Speaking at the Panorama Hotel in Mombasa, Gema national officials and the Kamba Community Advisory Council (KCAC) leaders agreed not to have preferred candidates in the August polls.
This means they will only back aspirants who will be elected during the nomination process.
The officials said the move to work together is aimed at ensuring the two communities are not only empowered economically but also politically.
“We agreed to vote as a bloc for our own economic and political empowerment. We’ll mobilise our communities to register in large numbers,” said KCAC spokesperson Philip Ndolo, as quoted by the Star.
On his part, Gema organising Secretary Paul Kinyanjui said they will focus on the Members of County Assembly (MCAs) seats in the election.
Analysts believe that ethnic blocs will play a pivotal role in the outcome of this year’s elections.
