The leaders however urged Wairi to fight graft and offer more job opportunities to the locals.

Led by the Coast Parliamentary Group chair Gunga Mwinga, the regional leaders called for immediate reforms at the Mombasa Port and asked Wairi to fight corruption, adding that she has served in the system for a long period and fully understands the sector.

Gunga added that the Coast community struggled for her to capture the post, and all she has to do is reciprocate the same.

"Wairi should ensure local residents are employed. She should also consult us on matters affecting the general public,” said Mwinga.

Governor Hassan Joho, through his personal aid Richard Chacha, said it was important to have a substantive director as opposed to an acting one.

He called on Wairi to tame corruption and ensure the Port of Mombasa competes favourably with other leading ports in the world.

“We want the Mombasa port to regain its long lost glory,” said Chacha.

Ms Wairi was officially confirmed on Tuesday by the KPA board chair Marsden Madoka, who said she is well suited to lead the port to greater heights.
