Kilifi North MP Owen Baya on Tuesday said he will table a bill seeking to empower investors to market tourism. According to the lawmaker, the Bill will boost the economy of the region if adopted by parliament. The vocal politician faulted the ministry and the tourism marketing board for allegedly failing to satisfactorily market the sector over the past years. He challenged Tourism CS Najib Balala to roll up his sleeves in order to restore the lost glory of the sector following his re-appointment. He noted that the tourism sector is the backbone of the Coast region’s economy, adding that more needs to be done to promote it.“We want to improve the economy of our people. Many tourists mean a stable economy for us,” said Baya, as quoted by The Star. The MP also said that the restriction of flights to the Malindi airport has greatly affected the growth of the tourism sector, adding that many airlines are ready to take tourists to the region. He further hailed the Kenya Airports Authority and Kenya Airport Management for the ongoing expansion. The remarks of the lawmaker come a time when the national and county governments have pledged to revamp the sector. Is there a newsworthy accident, incident or event happening in Mombasa County that you want Hivisasa to cover?
