A cobbler in Elburgon has been arrested for defiling a 13-year-old girl.

The man was picked from his house in Kambua estate in the outskirt of the town on Tuesday evening by police officers who were working on a tip of from residents.

The man Amos Maina, 38, said he had stayed with the girl for six weeks as a husband and wife.

Elburgon police chief Samuel Chebor said the man has stayed with the minor for over a month but the incident was not reported.

"Actually the man has defiled the minor for six weeks and nobody reported the incident," he said.

He said it is sad and unfortunate for such incidents to happen while the village watches thinking that it is a government responsibility.

Maina said he did not know that the girl is a school girl adding that the girl told him that she completed her KCPE last year but had no fees to proceed with her education.

"I did not know that the girl was a pupil and I need to be forgiven for the mistake,” he said.

The man is currently at the Elburgon police station awaiting to be taken to court.
