Speaking on Tuesday during the closure of a consumer sensitization forum at a local hotel in Eldoret town, Mutoro accused the Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs) of failing on its mandate.

The Cofek secretary general said health of consumers is at risk with the increasing counterfeit products in the market.

“We are alarmed by the increasing of counterfeit products mostly consumables that are being released to the market, Kebs should do its work and do it well,” he said.

Mutoro noted that there are many loopholes being used by rogue business people to smuggle counterfeits into the market.

The Cofek official said that Kebs has enough resources which it should use to protect Kenyans from counterfeit products and goods.

Muturo said that his organization will be alert, and that they will not allow more counterfeit good to be accessed into the country.

He alleged that a cartel of businessmen is behind the menace, warning that they will expose them if Kebs failed to act.

At the same time, Mutoro has put several supermarket chains on notice accusing them of swindling Kenyans, saying that several consumers have complained over exorbitant prices that are being charged on some products.

Mutoro asked supermarket owners to ensure that products and goods are sold in line with the recommended pricing list.
