Bobasi Member of Parliament Stephen Manoti has called on Coffee Cooperative Society managements in his constituency to have consultations with the farmers before they go borrowing loans from financial institutions. Manoti faulted the management committees of those cooperative societies saying that it is against the law to make farmers pay for loans they are not aware of when it was borrowed and what the money was used for. “There has been a problem with the management committees you elect into office and I want to call on these committees to always confer with the farmers before going for an overdraft from the banks,” he said. Speaking to Coffee farmers in Bobasi, Manoti said that the farmers are the owners of these institutions and they should be made aware or be consulted of any step that the management committees want to take up. This comes after the management committee of one of cooperative societies’ in Bobasi constituency went for an overdraft that has birthed up an interest of Sh13 million, a burden that is now left on the farmers to clear. The legislator also urged the farmers to be careful when electing into office the management committee members not to elect corrupt leaders that will misuse their hard earned money. “Be careful when electing people into office, make sure you have their records before entrusting them with your resources,” said Manoti.
