Coffee vendors in Kikuyu have today been banned from selling coffee in Kikuyu town as the plastic cups pollute the environment.
Kikuyu Environment deputy officer Stephen Ng’ang’a said that the business has caused the town to be dirty as residents litter the town with the plastic cups at night. He said that this forces the officers to clean the town.
He said despite the town having litter bins where such cups can be disposed, that was not the case as people also take advantage being at night and litter the plastic cups all over the town.
‘’These vendors have increased over the past three months and thus more litters in the town. Since they don’t have any other means to ensure their used cups are properly placed, we cannot continue making our town look like a marketplace,’’ said Ng’ang’a.
He revealed that the town was the face of the area and it must be kept clean at all times be it daytime or during the night. He revealed that these vendors start their operations at night because they are also aware that they don’t have what its needed to operate.
Ng’ang’a said most of them do not have permits to operate since they must have permits and they do the business at late hours when they know public health officers are not around.
"We have banned coffee vendors in the town. Anyone arrested will be prosecuted,’’ said Ng’ang’a.
