The Council of Governors has supported the move by the national government to ban production of plastic bags.

In a press statement, CoG chairman and Turkana Governor Josphat Nanok said the directive, which takes effect Monday, will ensure the environment is kept clean.

Nanok vowed to work with the government and the Ministry of Environment in creating awareness on the ban.

“The council supports the ban and will work with the national government and other stakeholders to ensure that the ban comes into effect,” said the governor on Saturday.

Nanok said the ban would ease effect on the environment caused by the plastic bags.

Supermarkets have started producing reusable bags to replace the plastic bags.

The ban on plastic bags was announced by Environment Cabinet Secretary Judi Wakhungu on February 28, 2017.
