Over 39,000 identity cards were processed in Thika west in the last two years, as the effects of the new service delivery charter takes shape in all government departments.

Area District registrar of persons Jacob Kang’utu said that out of the number, 9800 processed identity cards are still uncollected in various registration centres, and appealed to members of the public who applied for the cards between 2014 and January 2015 to check with his department for the document.

He revealed that his department has made arrangements with area provincial administration to publicize the matter, to avoid a pile up of processed identity cards at registration centres.

Kang’utu pointed out that during the first half of the current financial year, the department embarked on mobile registration exercises in secondary schools and registered over 900 students, who had attained the age of eighteen years.

He decried the low collection rate of processed identity cards in the area, saying that nobody should blame his department for failure to acquire an identity card come the election period.

“With the service delivery charter, service is supposed to be accorded in a specified period of time and every department is working towards meeting their deadlines to avoid being taken to court as stipulated in the new constitution,” explained the officer.

He cautioned members of the public against last minutes rushes for the precious document, adding that there was little congestion at registration centres, and that those intending to have the document can acquire one comfortably.
