Members of the public during a peace walk in Eldoret town on Sunday July 16, 2017. Columnist argues that things seem to be getting out of hand with only three weeks to August 8 polls [nation.co.ke].There is a sense that things are getting out of hand as Kenya edges closer to August 8 polls.
Daily Nation long-time columnist Rasna Warah says that major events that have happened over the past few weeks are 'nerve-wracking' and do not send a good signal as the country enters her most unpredictable moment of her 54 year history."Just a month before the elections (which will also take place in August and which are already showing signs of disarray), the Cabinet Secretary for Internal Security, Major-General (rtd) Joseph Nkaissery, whose no-nonsense leadership style was both admired and criticised, passed away. Nkaissery’s sudden death has created uncertainty about the country’s security as it approaches an election," writes Wara in her weekly Monday column. She also notes that Al-Shabaab militants have resurfaced in Lamu County where they have murdered several villagers adding that terrorism is another thing that Kenyans will be worrying about, along with the prospect of a violent election. The columnist also states that the ongoing legal battle between IEBC and Nasa over the printing of presidential ballot puts the August elections at a crossroads: "The IEBC has appealed the High Court decision, which could mean that the August elections might be postponed. Meanwhile, on social media, propagandists are beating the drums of war and having a field day demonising their opponents. One sensationalistic video is even predicting an apocalyptic future of mass starvation under a Raila Odinga presidency."
