National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) chairperson Winfred Lichuma has welcomed President Uhuru Kenyatta’s order to the National Assembly to re-introduce the two-thirds gender Bill that flopped last year to Parliament for debate.
Lichuma says that Uhuru’s directive is a relief to women especially ahead of the August 8 general election.
In an interview with the Daily Nation on Wednesday, the NGEC chairperson urged MPs to pass the two-thirds gender rule once it is re-introduce in Parliament.
“We are in agreement with President Kenyatta’s order to have the two thirds gender rule re-introduced for debate," she said as quoted by the Daily Nation.
Lichuma said that the two thirds gender Bill will guarantee equality in public appointments and leadership positions among men and women if passed.
The two-thirds gender Bill flopped last year as MPs failed to pass it.
Female MPs have been accusing their male counterparts of being non-committal to pass the Bill.
Last week President Kenyatta order National Assembly leader of Majority Aden Duale to re-introduce the Bill in Parliament.
The President asked MPs to make sure that the Bill is passed before the August 8 polls. Duale has since promised to re-introduce the Bill once Parliament resumes next month.
