The National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) is in the process of formulating a gender policy that will be used as a guide during employment in public institutions.

Speaking in Nakuru, commission chairperson Winfred Lichuma said that as a commission, they are yet to find a mathematical formula for the two thirds gender representation in the senate and national assembly.

“This gender issue is more than practicable in the county assemblies owing to the constitutional provision. I have severally reminded the President of the need to fulfil the affirmative action but the same has not always been met,” said Lichuma.

She added that members of the public should forward their views on how to get a mathematical formula for the two thirds gender rule as the same ought to be in place by 2017.

Lichuma also pointed out that this will greatly help in deciding the number of nominations to be made from either gender.

Just recently, Molo residents strongly condemned the nomination of eight hundred MCAs in Kenya’s forty seven county assemblies.

The residents said they did not understand their roles and did not understand how the nominations are done.

Teresia Njoki, one of the residents said: “I do not even understand how the nominations are done. The nominated are able bodied people and if they were disabled we would understand. They should be done away with completely. I do not know which and whom interests they represent. They are just fattening the country’s wage bill.”
