Mr Saleh said majority of the police are doing their job to protect innocent and hardworking Kenyans.

He said security in Garissa County has steadily improved in the past few years following the introduction of several security improvement initiatives.

Mr Saleh attributed the improvement on security to better coordination between the police and the public saying the residents have been working closely with the security agents in the county.

“Residents should not blame the police for everything since majority of them are working diligently. Thanks to police and residents’ cooperation, the region has been free of terror attacks for two years,” said the regional commissioner.

Elder Duabt Amey who is also the Livestock Marketing Council chairman on Sunday said that residents in North Eastern have suffered police brutality and forced disappearance that have yet to be investigated.

Mr Amey urged the government to support independent institutions through adequate funding.

“Security agents, including KDF, have been accused of rights violations. They are maintained by taxpayers and should be probed. We can’t accept rogue officers, who turn against those they are supposed to protect,” Mr Amey said

The Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) last week opened a regional office in Garissa that will conduct impartial and independent investigations and monitoring of the national police service to prevent impunity and enhance professionalism in the interest of the public.

The Garissa office will serve 7 counties; Mandera, Wajir, Isiolo, Tana River, Kitui and Marsabit.
