Devolution has rendered departments of public health and agriculture redundant in Mavoko Sub-County.

This is according to Athi River deputy county commissioner, Kodeck Makori, who said the departments have been experiencing a shortage of resources required to execute their mandate since devolution took effect.

"I have for a long time sympathised with the departments of Agriculture and Public Health Departments in Mavoko due to lack of resources," said Makori.

Makori who spoke to HiviSasa in his office on Friday said the county government had deprived the departments necessary resources and support they require to operate effectively.

He claims that the departments now operating under county government of Machakos have no vehicles, a situation he says has partially paralysed their operations.

"I wonder where the vehicles that used to be at the departments before devolution took effect disappeared to," said Makori.

Makori said the situation had burdened his office through offering support during emergencies or when they have resource-intensive assignments to undertake.

"Public health officers and agricultural extension officers from Mavoko keep calling my office to beg for vehicles to use for fieldwork and whenever they have emergencies," said Makori.

The commissioner cited the recent outbreak of cholera in the country saying that when a case was reported in Mlolongo town, he had to dispatch a number of vehicles assigned to his office to the public health department for rapid response.

He argued that the situation is derailing the progress of agriculture projects initiated by the government from 2003.

"The government had introduced free tilling of farms for residents and donation of free seeds but all that failed after the tractor project stalled due to lack of fuel," he said.

Makori called on the county's leadership to support the departments by giving them the necessary resources to ensure efficiency and effectiveness.
