Drug addiction among the youth in Mavoko is a security threat to the entire region, Mavoko assistant commissioner David Tegutwa says.
Addressing the press in his office on Thursday, Tegutwa, said their is a large number of the youth addicted to drugs from the region.
"Even though we as security agents have tried to comb all suspicious areas to cleae drugs from Mavoko, the addiction among the youth is still a major challenge," said Tegutwa.
According to Tegutwa, there was a problem in completely weeding out drug and substances consumed by a number of youth from the region especially bhang.
He says it is worrying that despite concerted efforts by the police in the area, addicts have a way of tracing the pedlars and abusing drugs.
"I personally wonder because however much we seize drugs like bhang from hands of pedlars in Mavoko with intent of cutting the supply, we still make arrests of youth who are drunk having used them," said Tegutwa.
He observed that the situation was a big security threat arguing that a number of those addicted to the drugs were jobless and idling.
"Given that such youth highly depend on the drugs, they could do anything to just raise money for buying the drugs," he says.
Tegutwa said the situation threatens the peace and security of innocent and hard working residents since such youth live among them.
