Nakoru noted that Nyamira County will have enough rainfall if more trees are planted.

"We all know the role trees play in bringing rains. Residents should take advantage of the ongoing heavy rains to plant more trees which are environment-friendly. Trees also prevent soil erosion during heavy floods. It will be shameful for the rains to end without planting more trees for the sake of protecting the environment,” he said.

The county chief urged residents who have planted blue gum trees near water catchment areas to uproot the trees and replace them with good species which will not cause drought.

“Trees such as blue gum should be uprooted from near water catchment areas. Unnecessary cutting of trees and charcoal burning is illegal and punishable by law and anyone found will be dealt with as by the environmental laws,” he added.

He called on stakeholders to sensitize residents on the need to plant more trees to conserve the environment.
