Nakuru County commissioner Mohammed Birik has warned criminals operating on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway that their days are numbered.
Speaking at Nakuru town on Sunday, Birik said that a crackdown on highway thugs is on, adding that those caught will be dealt with mercilessly.
The commissioner warned that officers will not tolerate any form of crime, stating that adequate measures have been put in place to ensure safety of residents.
Birik indicated that cases of carjacking and robberies are rife along sections of the Nakuru-Nairobi highway.
“We want to warn criminals that their days are numbered if they are not willing to surrender themselves,” he said.
The commissioner added that they are sampling tips that will lead to the arrest of the said highway robbers.
He urged motorists using the highway at night to be careful and not to offer lifts to people they do not know.
In order to curb the rising crime, the commissioner urged the county government to fast-track installation of streetlights on all sections of the road.
He said streetlights will keep robbers, carjackers and muggers at bay to allow motorists and businessmen conduct their business on a 24-hour basis.
This call comes barely a week after police gunned down three suspected robbers targeting motorists on the highway.
