Lamu County Commissioner Joseph Kanyiri has warned bloggers and social media users against using the internet to propagate hate speech this electioneering period.

He warned that anyone who will be found culpable will be arrested and prosecuted.

Addressing journalists in Lamu Town on Wednesday, the commissioner warned that police will not tolerate inciters and hate mongers before, during and after the August polls.

“Internet users must be careful with how they use social media platforms, those who preach or support hate speech will have themselves to blame once they are arrested,” said Kanyiri, as quoted by The Star.

The commissioner also warned politicians who spew hate hatred of dire consequences, adding that police are working with relevant government agencies to nail down rogue social media users.

“It is not going to be business as usual and anyone found spewing or promoting hatred will face the full force of the law,” he said.

He stated that police have been supplied with recording devices to monitor and record rogue politicians.

Kanyiri also warned politicians against organizing political meetings without informing police.

He said organizers of political meetings have to notify the police and get permits before staging the meetings.

The county commissioner also asked politicians to exercise tolerance and conduct peaceful campaigns.
