Nyamira County commissioner Isaiah Nakoru has raised concern over the increased number of land related disputes being reported to authorities in the region.
The county chief claimed that land grabbers and cartels are on the verge of grabbing people’s lands by forging land documents.
“I am saddened with the high cases of land disputes being reported to authorities in the region. It seems land grabbers and some cartels are colluding with workers working at the land’s office to forge land titles so that legal owners can be kicked out from their lands,” he said.
He said police suspect the latest incident where a woman committed suicide under unclear circumstances at Omonono village Borabu North Nyamira County to have been killed before she was hanged using a rope to show the public that she took her own life.
“We are investigating and incident where a woman who is also a widow is said to have committed suicide.
"But, before the incident happened she had reported to police that she was receiving threats from some people who wanted her to surrender her land to them. We suspect that she might have been strangled to death before she was hanged by a rope,” he said.
He called on residents to process for land titles to keep off land grabbers from grabbing lands in the region.
