Uasin Gishu County Commissioner Abdi Hassan has raised concerns over the rising cases of unrest in institutions of higher learning within the county.

The commissioner asked varsity and college administrators to ensure order in their institutions.

Addressing journalists in his office on Tuesday, Abdi said the recent riots experienced at the University of Eldoret and at the Moi University are of a concern.

He said such cases of unrest are likely to create anxiety among students, parents and stakeholders in the sector.

The commissioner noted that such riots have in the past lead to destruction of property and sometimes deaths.

“University and College administration boards should find ways of engaging their students to avert the cases of unrest we are experiencing,” he said.

The Uasin Gishu Commissioner said police will not hesitate to deal with rowdy students who threaten peace and order.

Abdi urged students to adhere to school regulations and also the law saying that stern action will be taken against law breakers.

Moi University main campus was closed indefinitely on Monday after students went on rampage after in regards to the forthcoming student elections.

The students are said to have aligned themselves to two political groups, a move which the University Vice Chancellor Richard Mibei says threatens peace.

University of Eldoret was closed last week after students rioted over alleged increase in tuition and accommodation fees.
