Mr Elungata said crime rates were still high in the area because of some corrupt chiefs who are habouring criminals.

According to Elungata, there are reports of criminals being protected by chiefs in their villages, something he termed illegal.

"We have information that some of the most wanted criminals are being protected by chiefs who are mandated to report them to the authorities," said Elungata.

"If you are found habouring such criminals, there will be no discussion but you will be fired directly," he added.

Elungata who was speaking on Tuesday in Kisumu during the County service delivery board meeting said if chiefs played their roles effectively, then crime in the area would be a thing of the past.

"Chiefs know these criminals as they leave with them in the same villages, if all of them did their work without compromise then I do not see why we should be worried about the existence of criminals," said Elungata.

Elungata warned chiefs with the behaviour of taking bribes will be sacked and prosecuted.

Last November he was also on record warning corrupt chiefs.
