Briefing the press at his office on Friday, the deputy commissioner said that at least eight teenagers have committed suicide in Turbo in the past two months.

The officer said the trend is worrying and called for urgent intervention and a bid to find out the cause of the suicides.

“I am concerned over the rising cases of teenagers committing suicide over unknown reasons,” he said.

The deputy commissioner asked local elders to help find solutions to the problem that he said posed a great danger to the development of the area.

The officer further asked local leaders to create forums where youths will be counselled and encouraged to move on with life.

Mr Wanjau however linked the problem to depression and failure by some youths to access employment. He observed that many youths in the area lack access to job opportunities and most of them see no reason to live.

The commissioner appealed to the county leadership to fast-track youth employment programmes to save the situation.

On the same note, the commissioner asked parents and guardians to take time and talk to their children adding that many parents and guardians have neglected their role a situation that contributes largely to the issues facing young people.
