Speaking to journalists in Garissa town on Friday, Hamud told the IEBC and the security agencies in Garissa to consult with aspirants and ensure peace prevails during elections.

He said political competition in the county was high, especially the gubernatorial and Garissa Township MP seats.

Hamud told authorities to keep vigil and ensure no violence is experienced in the county.

“Although we have never experienced political violence in Garissa, it is good to be pro-active. I am not predicting violence, but as an elder, I feel that we should not take things for granted,” he said.

“As elders we are playing our role by educating the electorate on the need to desist from acts of violence. But there is need to work with government agencies to consolidate our efforts.”

The leader said there should be a public meeting where all the aspirants will commit to holding peaceful rallies as elections draw closer.

Kenya Livestock Marketing Council Vice-Chairperson Dubat Hamey said politicians should desist from planting seeds of hatred in the arid county.

He said peaceful co-existence will lead to development.

“The politicians are in a better position of telling their supporters to maintain peace at all times,” he said.
