Kisumu County Assembly has passed a motion that will see community health workers in the assembly get monthly stipend starting the next financial year.
Committee chairman for Health Paul Odhiambo said community health workers had been neglected in the past despite their role in the community.
Odhiambo noted that the county should first start with 426 community health workers before more are roped into the program.
During the debate in the assembly nominated MCA Farida Salim said the community health workers remain the backbone of the health sector in the county and should be supported.
Salim said there are few health workers in the county that cannot cope with the number of patients seeking medical services and must be assisted by the community health workers.
The motion proposed that each worker be paid Sh5,000 to take care of their transport while offering services to the people.
The assembly further debated that the payment be scaled up in the subsequent financial years as part of motivation.
