The community policing initiative has registered tremendous success with areas which have fully embraced the concept witnessing a 30 to 40 per cent crime reduction.
Chairman of the national steering community policing initiative Joseph Kaguthi says that the committee has been visiting many grassroots areas creating awareness on community policing. He said that many people were willing to cooperate with the security agents, administration and their neighbours in the enhancing security in their regions.
‘‘I therefore urge chiefs and their assistants to embrace use of social media including twitter systems to pass security information in their areas of jurisdiction. Social media has played a major role in boosting security at the grassroots through early warning communication that has prevented many crimes from occurring, '' said Kaguthi.
Kaguthi also commended Lanet location Chief James Kariuki commonly referred to as the Tweeting Chief, whom he said has succeeded in fighting crime in his area through Twitter and urged other chiefs to emulate chief Kariuki.
He said the steering committee was considering creating a platform for chief Kariuki to sensitise and train other chiefs on how to effectively use twitter. He also urged the chiefs to seek the services of the younger generation who can teach them how to use the channels to promote security at the grassroots.
