The situation arose after MV Nyayo got stuck on ramp in the Mombasa mainland.

Unconfirmed reports indicated that several people were injured while struggling to board the vessel on the island.

According to Likoni police boss Willy Simba, security agencies were deployed to the area to prevent a stampede.

"We have enough officers to control passengers and motorists stranded since morning. We appeal for caution while boarding the ferries," Simba is quoted by the Star.

Several ferries have broken down along the channel with the management stating that lack of spare parts was to blame.
