Commuters between Athi River and Nairobi towns have threatened to hold a protest against what they termed as "robbery without violence" among matatu operators in the region.
Addressing press in Athi River town, through their spokesperson Seth Kaindi yesterday, the commuters accused the operators of extorting them their money.
They said the operators were fond of keeping their transport charges high throughout the year even if the government announced reduction of fuel.
"We are concerned as regular commuters between these two towns since these matatu operators have always kept their fares high even if reduced by the national government," said Kaindi.
Kaindi said that they suffered a great deal during the past December festive season when the matatu operators hiked transportation charges from Athi River to everywhere they operate in by 400%.
According to Kaindi, charges in the route have never gone down.
The spokesperson said that the route was also among those in Kenya hence ordered that the charges be reduced as in other routes across the nation.
Kaindi questioned why matatu operators were charging Sh100 from Athi River to Nairobi town and Sh40 between Athi River and Mlolongo while those commuting between Kitengela and Nairobi are charged Sh80 and Kitengela to Mlolongo Sh30.
He called on the national government to intervene to seize the extortion by the operators, warning that if nothing was swiftly done, they would hold demonstrations to paralyze public transport on the route.
