Companies that donate money towards humanitarian assistance declared by the president will pay less tax.

Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich said the firms will be allowed to deduct a fraction of the cash as part of their tax obligation.

President Uhuru Kenyatta in February declared famine a national disaster.

The Kenya Red Cross, at the time, estimated that 2.7 million Kenyans were in dire need of food aid.

Food shortage emanated from a prolonged drought experienced in various parts of the country especially in Northern Kenya.

Uhuru at the height of the drought called on local and international partners to intervene and contain the situation.

The World Food Programme reported it was short of Sh2.26 billion to provide food to 428,000 school children in famine-stricken regions.

The Central government released Sh7.3 billion to fight drought while county governments disbursed Sh2 billion towards the course.

23 out of the 47 counties according to the government faced famine and needed humanitarian assistance.
