Thika Water and Sewerage Company (Thiwasco) has announced plans to construct a Sh850 million dam to curb water shortage in the populous town.

The two-year project is expected to enable the firm to add 15,000 cubic metres of water daily into its system.

Thiwasco chairman Joseph Mukora Kimani said the mega expansion would enable the company to meet the high demand of water in the area that hosts many industries.

"Currently, the company has a capacity of supplying about 37,000 cubic metres of water daily, against a demand of about 45,000 cubic metres of water daily. The expansion is meant to bridge the deficit," Kimani said.

The Kariminu Water Project, near Maryhill High School, will be funded by the World Bank through the Water Services Regulatory Board (Wasreb).

Kimani said the high demand for water in Thika could be attributed to the rapidly growing population, which he noted had surpassed 200,000 people.

"We expect the project, which is currently in the procurement stage, to commence this January. Once complete, it will help supply water to such areas as Kiganjo, Muthara, Kiandutu, Athena and Kianjau," he said.

Mukora also revealed the company was planning to drill and equip eight boreholes with a view of injecting additional 6,000 cubic metres of water per day.
