Makata and Kam SACCOs, which had dominated the lucrative route for many years have been forced to trim their fares following the entry of Eastern Bypass Travellers Investment (EBTI) to the route.

Commuters who frequent the route told this writer that of late they have been able to enjoy reduced fares from the capital city to Tala and Kangundo towns.

But operators of Kam and Makata have been rattled by the move, terming it as 'cut-throat competition' aimed at hurting local investors.

EBTI have been charging Sh150 from city center to Kangundo - barely 58 kilometers away, one hundred shillings cheaper than their competitors.

Observers have also predicted further reduction of matatu fares after the ongoing tarmacking of Kenol-Koma road and Tala-Donyosabuk road, which was commissioned last month by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The roads will now link Machakos to Thika, Mwingi and the Konza techno city.
