The National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) has revealed that plastic bags are still being manufactured in the country despite an imposed ban.

Unscrupulous traders have now resorted to manufacture the plastic bags at night.

The environmental watchdog is now planning to initiate night raids and crackdowns on manufacturers.NEMA confiscated over 4tonnes of plastic bags on Monday under the cover of darkness being packed for the market."We are starting inspections at night from Tuesday in order to step up the effectiveness of the ban as some manufacturers are operating at night," NEMA director of Environment, Njoki Mukiri said.

She also said that they have a list of individuals who were running the outlawed business within the country and they will be keeping an eye on them to see if they are continuing with the production.

"We have a list of these guys who were producing the bags and we go to check if they are still producing," she said.

NEMA has also acknowledged that it has become difficult to identify manufacturers since they have put notices on factories indicating that they stopped production and their stores are not labelled yet the production is still on.
