The Commission of University Education - CUE has been asked to conduct a serious anti-drug abuse campaign in all the universities in the country so as to bar youth from engaging in drug menace.
The Commission has been further challenged to include anti drug abuse lobbies and activists in the campaign so that it can successful instill important information to the students in a bid to protect them from drug abuse menace.
Addressing over 50 Jomo Kenyatta University students pursuing Public health at the Reach out offices in Mombasa on Friday, ReachOut Centre Trust an anti-drug abuse lobby Executive director Taib Abdulrahman said that drug abuse among students in the higher learning institution was interfering with the education and focus of the students.
Taib said that some of the students have failed to attain their goals in life after they were introduced to the habit by their very close friends in campuses. He challenged the students to always be their friends’ keeper so that the drug abuse menace does not get its way through universities.
“You will not notice the negative impact of drug abuse until you are already affected by being lured into the health problem, you must be very careful while in these institutions,” he said.
Taib asked the Commission no to shy away from the reality in both public and private universities as students were indulging in drug abuse.
“Students are used by traffickers to supply drugs to their colleagues, a thread which cannot be easily detected,” added Mr. Taib.
He said that reach out will carry on with anti drug abuse campaign in universities in a bid to protect students from indulging in the menace.
