A Nakuru criminal gang by the name Confirm has links to a local politician, residents have said.
The group, which was proscribed by Interior CS in 2016, continues to operate within Nakuru slums where they have formed branches to swindle innocent Kenyans their money.
Confirm is made up of local youths who send fake money transfer messages to unsuspecting Kenyans and con them money.
Routine ways they operate in is packaging fake M-pesa messages and pretend they have sent money by mistake.
They then ask for a refund.
However, with Safaricom running a massive campaign to alert its customers against conmen, the group is mutating to a dangerous criminal outfit.
They maraud along Kanu Street especially on Saturday night among other inner areas of the slums where ‘new comers’ are a target.
Residents who asked for anonymity said a local politician is the criminal's ‘godfather’.
“It is well known that he protects them. When they are arrested, they call him and he bails them out,” a resident said.
Another resident said the police know this connection.
“There was a time he even said Confirm should be registered as a youth group. He is their godfather, and even police knows because he makes calls for them to be released or shows up to pay bonds,” the resident said.
This, residents claimed, is a working relationship where the group drums up support for the politician during campaigns.
“They work for him during campaigns. They drum support and harass his opponents,” another resident said.
